If you’re a student at Ascent College, using Grammarly Authorship is an important part of your writing process. It helps demonstrate your work and ensures academic integrity, while also giving your professors insight into how your paper was developed.

The good news? Once you know the steps, it’s pretty simple.

Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

What Is Grammarly Authorship?

Grammarly Authorship is a feature that tracks your writing activity and generates a report showing how your document was created.

At Ascent College, you’ll submit this report along with your paper.

You Have Two Options

You can use Grammarly Authorship in one of two ways:

Option 1: Write in Microsoft Word or Google Docs

Option 2: Write directly in Grammarly Docs

We’ll walk you through both.

Option 1: Using Microsoft Word or Google Docs

Step 1: Download Grammarly

Before you start writing, make sure Grammarly is installed on your device. If Grammarly is already installed, skip to Step 2.

  • Log in to your Ascent College Grammarly account.
  • Click “Apps” in the left menu.
  • Download the version that fits your device.

If you haven’t set up your account yet or are experiencing any technical challenges, reach out to our Registrar, Sonji Thee, at sthee@ascent.edu.

Step 2: Create Your Document

  • Open Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
  • Start a new blank document.
  • Name and save your file.

Step 3: Turn On Authorship Tracking

This is the most important step.

  • Look for the fingerprint icon on the bottom left of your new blank document.
  • Click it and enable tracking in the pop-up box.

Depending on your platform:

  • In Google Docs → Turn on “Track your writing.”
  • In Microsoft Word → Click “Track writing activity.”

Important Note for Mac Users

Grammarly Authorship does not work in Safari.

If you’re on a Mac, you’ll need to:

  • Use Google Chrome
  • Install the specific Grammarly Chrome extension.
  • Activate Grammarly within the browser.

Step 4: Write Your Paper

Go ahead and complete your assignment as usual.

Helpful tip: As you write, keep track of sources by adding notes like (Author, page number) so citations are easier later.

Step 5: Generate Your Authorship Report

Once your paper is finished:

  • Click the fingerprint icon.
  • Select “See Report” to generate your Authorship report.
  • Review your report.

Step 6: Share Your Report

  • Click “Share Report.”
  • Toggle on: “Make this report visible to anyone with the link.”
  • Copy the link.

Step 7: Add the Link to Your Paper

Paste the report link at the end of your document.

If you’re submitting a Google Doc link:

  • Make sure your Google document is also shared with your professor by selecting “Share” (right-click on the document in your Google Drive), entering the professor’s email address, and selecting the appropriate permission level (Viewer – Read Only).
  • Note: You do not need to send an email notification to your professor, as they have the URL link you provided in your paper.

Step 8: Submit Your Assignment

Upload your paper through Populi, just like any other assignment.

Option 2: Using Grammarly Docs

Prefer to keep everything in one place? You can write directly inside Grammarly.

Here’s how:

  1. Open your Grammarly account.
  2. Click “Docs” → “New Document.”
  3. Start writing (Authorship tracking is automatic).

While You Write

  • Use the fingerprint icon to toggle the report on/off.
  • Add citation notes as you go.
  • Your work is automatically saved.

When You’re Finished

  1. Open the Authorship report by clicking on the Grammarly Authorship fingerprint icon.
  2. Review and make any needed edits.
  3. Click “Share Report.”
  4. Turn on link visibility, “Make this report visible to anyone with the link.” (Do not change the default, “Include writing replay.”)
  5. Copy the link for your Grammarly Authorship report and paste this URL at the end of your paper.

Export Your Paper

  • Click the three dots (top right).
  • Select “Print & Export” → “Export as Word document.”
  • Download the file, which will save to your “Downloads” folder.

Then:

  • Add your title page.
  • Format citations and bibliography.

Final Step: Submit

Upload your completed paper (including the report link) to Populi.

Final Thoughts

Using Grammarly Authorship might feel like an extra step at first, but it quickly becomes part of your normal workflow.

It’s there to support you, not complicate things.

Once you’ve done it a few times, it becomes second nature and helps you submit your work with confidence. Make it a habit to check the Student Handbook so you stay up to date on Ascent College’s Generative Artificial Intelligence Policy.
